The African grey parrot has been kept as a pet since the early 1500s, and is the number one parrot kept in Europe. African greys are one of the smartest parrots you could ever own. They are known for their amazing ability to mimic any sound or word they choose, from water dripping, ambulance sirens, to your significant other's voice encourgaging you to "get up lazy". They have also been able to distinguish the difference between colors and shapes, as well as display a level of intelligence similar to a humans when given the proper motivation. An African Grey named Alex, part of a study conducted by Dr. Irene Pepperberg, established that parrots can do more than mimic, they can learn and understand. These parrots make great companions for those with time to socialize with them.
