African Spurred Tortoise

(Geochelone
Sulcata)

Sulcata tortoises come from the hottest parts of Africa usually found in grasslands. These tortoises are one of the largest species available in the pet trade. Sulcata tortoises can get VERY large in size with a carapace length measuring 24 to 30 inches and reaching weights of 75 to 110 lbs.

These creatures require a lot of space and time to be properly cared for in captivity. If you live in a hot arid environment like Florida or Texas; you can create a outside pen for them to live in granted you take precautions against predators and thieves. This enclosure should be study and account for their ability to dig deep. Make sure to monitor the environmental changes and bring them inside should temperatures drop below their acceptable limits. If you live in states that have seasonal climate changes, make an enclosure indoors. Indoor enclosures should have a hiding spot as well as a heat gradient to ensure proper heat. I keep my "hot" side of their cage at 85 degree F. Also provide a water dish that they may crawl into and soak. Change water out daily and provide a variety a grasses and leafy vegetation for food daily.

Please think long and hard about getting one of these tortoises. Many people purchase them as a hatchling and later decide they no longer want to care for them once they grow too large. These creatures deserve a home for life so please do not purchase on if you do not intend on caring for it as long as it shall live.
